Few cities in the world, never mind Europe can match the splendour and style of Vienna on a sunny October day, mercifully shorn of many of its tourist hordes as the harsh chill of winter beckons. The architecture has a grace and grandeur all its own and the fashion boutiques reek of wealth and privilege, while what can possibly beat the illicit thrill of treacly thick hot chocolate and a slice of Sacher Torte, except perhaps a repeat order.

According to Begbies (home of MT’s Traveller’s Tales blogger Nick Hood), the number of companies going out of business has fallen by 18% – but that’s a slower rate of recovery than during the same time last year, when insolvencies fell by 20%. And the amount businesses owe has gone up: the total debt for those with critical financial problems has now hit £57.5bn – up from £55bn back in March. Ouch. It doesn’t exactly help, either, that in an effort to shore up its tax revenues, HMRC is adopting an increasingly hard line when it comes to chasing up taxes.

IT IS a known fact that when recession strikes there is a lag between companies beginning to feel the pain and actually getting into real difficulties. This time around it is no different and, with just days to go until the Comprehensive Spending Review is unveiled, many UK businesses that are already struggling are hoping the cuts don’t finish them off.
